For those of you who don’t know, gingham is a lightweight plain-woven cotton cloth, typically checked in white and one other bold color. The checked pattern can come in large checks or very small ones and the color choices are not set in stone. Gingham fabrics are used to make almost every kind of clothing from shirts, pants, and jackets for men to blouses, hair accessories, trousers, and outerwear for women. But one of the most classic and timeless articles of clothing is the gingham dress.
Since the fabric is lightweight, it is typically used for spring and summer fashions. One of the most popular styles of dress for gingham is the shirt dress. A gingham shirt dress can be knee length, mid length, or go all the way to the floor. Shirt dresses come in sleeveless, short sleeve, and even long sleeve varieties . However, long sleeve shirt dresses are not always appropriate for summer. This style is quite preppy and youthful. You can see some examples of the gingham shirt dress below.
Even though the shirt dress is probably the most popular form of gingham dress you will see, women wear other styles as well. Gingham is usually described as pretty and playful. As a result you will see this fabric used a lot in fun sun dresses. Halter tops, off the shoulder looks, and clean crew top dresses are all common for gingham dresses. You can see some of the variety available in gingham sun dresses below.
Even though gingham is described as a playful and youthful fashion, you can make the look feel more sophisticated with the right silhouette or color combinations. Hourglass shaped dresses are going to have a more grown up feel to them than the flowy dresses seen above. In addition to the right silhouette, the right color combination can make gingham feel more sophisticated. More subdued color combinations like nude and white have a more adult feel to them than bright color combinations that include pink or bright primary colors. You can see some examples of sophisticated gingham looks below.
Gingham dresses are something that show up on the runway in almost every spring/summer fashion season. This year is no exception. One of my favorites shows that gingham can work even in the most sophisticated of situations – the gown. Carolina Herrera included the dress below in her 2017 spring/summer collection.
