Chiffon is a sheer and lightweight fabric that can be made from silk, cotton, or synthetics and chiffon dresses come in just as many styles. The main attribute of chiffon that makes it great for dresses is the fact that is both sensual and sweetly feminine. Depending on how you use this fabric, you can have an elegant evening gown, a sexy cocktail dress, a casual weekend outfit, or an office appropriate work dress. Let’s look at some examples.
In the pictures above you will see some examples of chiffon evening dresses. When designers like Badgley Mischka use chiffon in an evening dress they mostly use it in layers. Whether you find multiple layers of chiffon or a single chiffon layer over some other fabric, you can’t really see through the dress. There are exceptions, of course. Some chiffon evening gowns will have chiffon over the shoulders so that they can be clearly seen through the fabric. The reason that you put layers of chiffon over other fabric or work in layers all together is because that thin extra layer of very flowy fabric makes the whole garment seem light and airy. Chiffon dresses are probably most popular as evening wear.
If you want to wear something a bit more sensual, then you might try a chiffon cocktail dress. When chiffon is used in this type of garment, it is usually in a style we call the lolita dress. These include baby doll dresses and dresses with frills, ruffles, bows, etc. Basically they are very girly dresses and they always fall to above the knee. You can see several examples of chiffon lolita dresses above. Sometimes the chiffon dresses will use multiple layers of chiffon like in an evening gown but be cut off above the knee for that baby doll style. Sometimes you will see chiffon ruffles and embellishments on a skinny cocktail dress. Chiffon can also be used for many other popular cocktail dress styles like off the shoulder looks.
If you aren’t looking to head out on the town, you can still find chiffon dresses to meet your needs. Chiffon is used a lot in bohemian style dress and simple maxi dresses. The flowy nature of chiffon makes it perfect for the laid back boho style. You can find boho chiffon dresses with both long sleeves and short sleeves as well as hemlines above the knee, at the ankle, and everywhere in between. Most of these outfits can be described as a chiffon shirt dress because they often have a collar and look something like a shirt at first glance. Many of the looks pictured above could also be worn to the office. If you pair a chiffon dress with a jacket, you can make it look quite professional yet keep your femininity intact.
One of the great features of chiffon is the fact that it is so lightweight. This means that it can be easily layered and is appropriate to wear in spring and summer. But, you can also carry it over into the fall or even winter if you pair it with the right footwear or accessories. The dress above has short sleeves. Sleeves will also help you to wear your chiffon dresses in the fall. It isn’t practical to be wearing sleeveless garments in cooler temperatures, but the short sleeves make it appropriate. However, the sleeves are so sheer and airy that they don’t make the dress too uncomfortable for summer.
