The baja pullover, also known as baja sweatshirt, baja hoodies, or baja sweater, is something that once was strictly seen on beaches in southern California and Mexico. But, since their popularity with the surfer community in the early 90s, the baja style top is now more mainstream. Let’s first talk about what I mean. The original baja pullover was a jacket. They had one large pocket in the front, a hood, and vents on the sides. They were usually decorated with a pattern that included horizontal stripes on the sleeves and hood and vertical stripes on the rest of the jacket. Like most hooded sweatshirts or jackets, they had drawstrings on the hood. But the drawstrings on a baja jacket were much more rectangular and didn’t pull the hood into a circle for your face to show through like most jackets. The strings were more decorative. Most of those features have carried over into what we now call baja pullovers.
Is the Baja Pullover Still Fashionable Today?
The short answer is yes. Baja pullovers have changed a little bit, but they are still quite fashionable. Most baja pullover sweatshirts still have the one large pocket and hood, but most do not have the vents. The horizontal and vertical stripe pattern is popular, but not necessary for something to be called a baja sweatshirt. One major difference between the original baja jacket and the baja trend that is popular today is the fabric used. Most baja jackets from the 90s were made of a heavy cotton/wool blend. The baja sweaters and shirts today are usually a softer cotton/polyester blend. They are more lightweight so that they can be worm as a top rather than an outer garment.
The baja pullover played a large part in the hoodie trend that is popular even on the runways for Spring and Summer 2017. While not strictly baja pullovers, hoodies, whether pullover or zippered base their style on the baja formula. Many have one large pocket in the front, or the appearance of one cut up by a zipper and many have a large hood with drawstrings. Since fashion trends in general are leaning towards what is comfortable and practical for everyday people to wear, it is no surprise that this comfortable surfer throwback is making a comeback!
