Trench coats have been around for a very long time, but you no longer have to consider this spring closet staple old fashioned or out of style. As evidenced by its presence on many Spring 2017 runways, the trench coat is back! A trench coat is traditionally defined as a loose, belted, double breasted raincoat with deep pockets and a waterproof lining. The traditional double breasted trench coat with a cinched waist is the typical Burberry product like the one below. You’ll find trench coats in a variety of lengths. Shorter trench coats that stop just below the butt are the most casual, and they get more formal as you increase the length to as low as mid calf.
Add a Splash of Color
While khaki is the most common color scheme for trench coats, it is by no means the only acceptable color. However, don’t think that you have to shy away from khaki because it is boring. Khaki is actually a trend that we saw on many a runway during New York Fashion Week in February. But, if you want to branch out you’ll find bright colors and prints equally acceptable. Trench coats come in a wide variety of prints, colors, and fabrics. Below you can see an example of a denim trench coat as well as one with subtle print accents in the pockets and collar. No matter how loud you want to be, there is a trench coat to fit your style.
Trench Coats for Evening
While most women wear trench coats during the day, you can find trench coats for evening. The best way to make a trench coat appropriate for an evening out is to choose an appropriate fabric. Leather trench coats are dressier than any other fabric and they come in a variety of colors. A black patent leather trench coat will look great with any cocktail dress. And a brown or red leather trench coat will look great with a dressy work outfit.
Embellish Your Trench Coat
In addition to changing up the color and fabric of your trench coat, you can get a more individual look by adding embellishments. Below you see two examples of trench coat embellishments. The trench coat on the left has lace overlay and the one on the right has a fur collar. Adding these trims and details gives your traditional and common trench coat a unique and individual twist. You can bring out your personality with your trench coat.
