In addition to clothing, there are always jewelry trends that are introduced on the runways each season. For spring and summer 2017, one such jewelry trend is the long pendant. While you will still find chokers on the runway, long pendants are becoming more and more popular. I feel like this goes along with the general trend in all fashion towards items that are more comfortable and easy to wear.
The Statement Pendant
In addition to that overall trend toward comfort, designers also seem to be trending toward pieces that make a statement because they are big or bold. The long pendant from Givenchy pictured above is one such statement pendant. It is quite large and becomes a focal point of the outfit since the suit it is paired with is relatively plain. When you choose to wear a long pendant that makes such a statement, it is generally a good idea to minimize what you are wearing behind it. That it why you will see women wearing long pendants with deep V-neck collars.
However, it is not strictly necessary to wear statement pendants with nothing underneath. You can also wear them with a plain background that helps to bring attention to the pendant. The thin chain with an interesting charm on the end seen in Alexander Wang photo above is one example of this. And yet another way to wear a long pendant is when it blends into the outfit you wear. In the Alexander Wang photo below you can see that the black lanyard matches the black trim on the model’s outfit and the black pendant sits on an area of the garment that is see through because of lace. It blends in nicely with the outfit.
Another thing of note about the Wang photo above is that the necklace part of a long pendant does not have to be a chain. Long pendants can use chains, but they can also use strings of beads or cloth lanyards like the one pictured above. Varying the necklace materials is just one more way that you can make a statement with your long pendant.
In the choices above you will see several different variations on the long pendant including a traditional one with a thin chain and a charm at the end and one with a thin chain but a large statement pendant at the end. You will also notice one where the initial necklace is not especially long, but the pendant has things hanging from it that make the entire piece of jewelry quite long. And finally, you will see one where the necklace is adorned with additional embellishments that make the pendant more interesting.
What Do I Do With All My Chokers and Short Pendant Necklaces?
Chokers and short pendant necklaces are by no means out of fashion. You can still wear them if you want, but there is a way to use your chokers and short pendants while still staying true to the long pendant trend. You can layer your neck jewelry all the way from a choker down to a long pendant that grazes the navel. There is an example of this above.
