The slogan T-shirt has been around for a long time, but it seems bigger than ever as evidenced by how often they showed up on runways this year. As you probably know, there is a general trend in fashion for the clothes we see on the runway to be more consumer friendly and for the clothes released by designers to be more everyday wearable. This is one reason that athleisure is so popular. Slogan T-shirts fit in well with this general trend because everybody can wear a T-shirt.
We All Love the Slogan T-shirt
The slogan T-shirt first came onto the fashion scene in a big way about ten years ago with Henry Holland’s cheeky fashion groupie T-shirts. His clever rhyming messages about and to famous models got everyone’s attention. You can see two examples above. He celebrated the tenth anniversary of those T-shirts with a release of new slogan tees this year. Slogan T-shirts generally serve one of three purposes. Henry Holland’s creations serve the first – make you smile!
The second purpose of a slogan T-shirt is to make a political statement. The runways for Spring/Summer 2017 were full of political statements given the highly contentious year we just finished in politics and the surely contentious years to come. Perhaps the most obvious political message came from Maria Grazia Chiuri with her “Everyone Should be Feminists” T-shirt. Done in a simple white with black lettering, she lets the message speak for itself.
The third purpose of slogan T-shirts is general messaging. These are messages that do not necessarily have a political motivation, just send a general message out into the world. Haider Ackerman accomplished this task with his sweatshirt/T-shirt with the message “Be Your Own Hero”. This slogan shirt is appropriate no matter what the political climate. You can see some additional examples of general messaging in the two top shirts below. The one on the left from Sacai is the perfect general message slogan T-shirt for any fashion fan. The shirt on the right from SteveJ & YaniP has a great message that translates to “Me and You, Friendship”.
In addition to following the general trend toward more comfortable and accessible clothing, designers have another reason for designing the slogan T-shirt. A slogan T-shirt is generally a relatively inexpensive way for someone to get introduced to a brand. You can purchase T-shirts like the two above with a brand name on them and announce your allegiance to that brand without breaking the bank.
