In recent years there has been a general trend of revisiting the seventies on the runway. However, something different happened during the Spring/Summer 2016 runway shows. Designers seemed to abandon the high waisted seventies and go back to the low rise pants of the late nineties and early naughts. Low rise pants seem to be making a comeback. Vogue even announced with much fanfare that they were back. Unfortunately, this might not be good news to a lot of women out there. Let’s talk some more about who benefits from this trend and why it might be better if it stayed gone for others.
Low waist jeans and other pants are best suited to women with long legs and a relatively flat belly. Women with short legs don’t look great in these pants because the shorter inseam only accentuates the shortness of their legs. Women with lots of belly fat or women who are apple shaped with a large middle should not wear low cut jeans or pants at all since it will be very unflattering. With these seemingly expansive restrictions, it is a wonder that this trend was ever super popular.
One saving grace of the return of the low rise pant is that at least this time around we do not have to deal with low waist skinny jeans or pants. Skinny pants in general are falling out of favor and the low rise pants that we saw on the runway for Spring 2016 were all slouchy or straight legged. You can see some examples of this style above.
Women in low rise jeans or pants often complain about the pants revealing too much when they bend over or crouch down. This problem gets worse as the rise gets lower. Most pants are considered low rise if they have an eight inch rise or less. If this is a problem for you then you might want to consider a belt to go with your pants. Unfortunately, since most low rise pants sit on the hips or the widest point of the pant, belts don’t always do the trick. However, if the rise is high enough, you might be able to use a belt to help you keep what you don’t want the world to see private.
Since so many women have a problem with this style of pant, I wonder if they really are making a comeback, or if we are just seeing a few last gasps from the early naughts. I think that I am in the camp that hopes low rise jeans are a thing of the past and we can all go back to wearing jeans that we don’t have to worry about covering up with long shirts and layers.
